By bolstering the immune system, you can improve your body’s ability to avoid damage from infectious agents and mutated cells. Plus, by blocking the mechanisms tumors use to suppress the immune system, you can enjoy the maximum benefit your immune system provides and increase the speed and strength with which it responds to the perceived threat of cancer. Right at this moment, your immune system needs to be your top priority.

The human body possesses an amazing ability to protect itself from all kinds of harm and is constantly engaged in neutralizing internal and external danger. The immune system is a series of mechanisms that protect against disease by identifying and killing pathogens, germs, mutated cells, and tumors. More importantly, it can distinguish between dangerous elements and healthy cells.

Our patients are prescribed agents that can aid the immune system’s ability to attack cancer by optimizing the function of natural killer cells (NK) and cytotoxic T-cells (Tc ). NK cells can kill a broad range of cancer cells; Tc cells target cancer cells that express specific proteins not produced by healthy tissues. Though immune cells can rarely destroy large tumors, they may kill the small nests of tumor cells that give rise to new metastases or that can cause a recurrence of cancer following a remission. Therefore, boosting the activity of NK cells and Tc cells is our first piece of immune-stimulation therapy.

Cancers we treat

Adrenal Cancer

The adrenal glands are triangular shaped glands that are located on top of the kidneys (also referred to as suprarenal glands). These glands produce steroid hormones and are responsible for controlling the stress response in our body as well as regulating our immune system.

An adrenal tumor is a benign tumor of the adrenal gland. Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor of the adrenal gland and is an uncommon, uncompromising form of cancer which can occur in children or adults. Due to their usually deep positioning, diagnosis can be delayed until the cancer is quite large, by then possibly invading vessels and metastasizing by means of surrounding tissue, the lymphatic system, blood, or other organs. The cause of adrenal cancer is unknown. It is believed that heredity can play a role in the development of this disease. This form of cancer is most common in people in their 30’s and 40’s. The overall prognosis of adrenal cancer is poor.

  • Raised blood pressure
  • Thirst
  • Fever
  • Abdominal mass
  • Abdominal pain
  • Always feeling full
  • Weight gain that is more noticeable in the trunk of the body
  • Passing urine frequently
  • Muscle cramps

Anal Cancer

Anal cancer is a rare disease that forms in the tissues of the anus. The anus is the opening of the rectum that leads to the lower end of the intestines. This part of the digestive system helps fecal matter exit from the body while removing water and nutrients from food. Anal cancer is a rare and is most commonly found in men and women over the age of 50. Smoking and diets high in fat and low in fiber have been found to attribute to anal cancer.

A large number of people with anal cancer have no symptoms. Symptoms could include:

  • Warts, sores, or bumps on the anus or genitals
  • Itching in the area of the anus
  • Open sores in the area of the anus
  • Discharge or bleeding from the anus
  • Pain or discomfort arising from the area of the anus

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a malignant cancer that forms in the cells and tissues of the breast. Breast cancer is more common in women and although rare, it does occur in men.

A large number of people with breast cancer have no outward symptoms. Self examination is a common discovery of breast cancer. Initial symptoms could include:

  • A small painless lump
  • An area of thickened skin
  • Dimpled skin
  • Nipple retraction
  • Breast swelling
  • Redness or an enlarged underarm lymph node

Bile Duct Cancer

The bile duct is a long tube-like channel that carries bile from the liver to the intestine. Bile is a substance that aids in digestion by breaking down fats.

Cholangiocarcinoma, another name for bile duct cancer, can develop in any part of the bile duct, usually the parts that are outside of the liver. This cancer is the most common reason for obstruction of the bile duct. Cancer of the bile duct could prevent the flow of bile. The cause of bile duct cancer is unknown. This form of cancer is most commonly diagnosed in people in their 60’s and 70’s.

Bile duct cancer signs or symptoms can easily be mistaken for other medical conditions. Symptoms could include:

  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Itchy skin
  • Pale Stools

Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is cancer that originates in the bone, but can also originate from another source in the body.

A true bone cancer is referred to as a sarcoma and can develop any place in the body. Bone cancer that starts in the bone is rare, more common is metastatic bone cancer, which is cancer that has started elsewhere in the body and spread to the bones.

Bone cancer can have various signs and symptoms depending on the size and location of the tumor. Symptoms could include:

  • Pain
  • Joint swelling and tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia

Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer involves malignant cell growth inside the walls of the urinary bladder which can result in a malignant tumor. The exact cause of bladder cancer is unknown. It is believed that smoking and environmental exposure can play a role in the development of this disease.

The following symptoms of bladder cancer are not exclusive to this disease. Symptoms could include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling the need to urinate with no results
  • Back or abdominal pain

Cervical Cancer

The cervix is a narrow opening of the female reproductive system separating the vaginal canal from the uterus. The main purpose of the cervix is to dilate during labor which allows for delivery of the baby.

Cervical cancer can be very serious. It is cancer that usually begins with malignant cells within the cervix. Women may unknowingly increase their risk for cervical cancer by smoking, using oral contraceptives, and having many sexual partners. Another great risk factor is infection with HPV.

Cervical cancer may not cause any initial signs and symptoms. It can take several years for cells to become cancerous in the cervix. As the disease progresses symptoms will become more evident. Symptoms could include:

  • Irregular or heavy vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Watery or bloody vaginal discharge
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Pain in the area of the stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Lumpy mass in the abdomen

Gastrointestinal Cancer

The gastrointestinal system (GI) is the system that brings food into the body and makes it absorbable. The main purposes of the gastrointestinal system are to eat, digest, absorb, and elimination of waste.

Gastrointestinal cancers is cancer of the organs found in our digestive system . The digestive system includes the anus, bile duct, colon, esophagus, liver, pancreas, peritoneal cavity, rectum, small intestine and stomach. Gastrointestinal cancer is most commonly found in the small intestine.

Lymphoma

The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs of the immune system designed to filter out cell waste and bacteria, and to fight infection in our body. Clusters of lymph nodes are located widely throughout our body in the neck, armpits, abdomen, and groin.

Lymphoma is cancer that begins in the cells of lymph nodes. This cancer is caused when your white blood cells work erratically and do not form, divide, or multiply normally. This results in useless cells which collect in the lymph nodes and grow into tumors.

Most of the signs and symptoms of lymphoma appear to be harmless symptoms that can be related to a number of other diseases. Lymphoma can be slow growing and generally does not raise alarm until in progressed stages. Symptoms could include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats

Leyomiosarcoma

A leiomyosarcoma belongs to a group of rare cancers called soft tissue sarcomas. Sarcomas are cancers that develop in the supporting or connective tissues of the body, such as muscle, fat, nerves, blood vessels, bone and cartilage. Leiomyosarcomas are one of the more common types of sarcoma to occur in adults. They start in smooth muscle tissue. These tissues are responsible for involuntary movements in the body and are found on the walls of muscular organs such as the heart, stomach and the walls of blood vessels.  This means that leiomyosarcomas can start anywhere in the body. Common places are the walls of the womb (uterus), the limbs and the digestive system, particularly the stomach.

People with early leiomyosarcoma often do not have any symptoms. Most leiomyosarcomas are diagnosed after a person develops symptoms. These may include:

  • A lump or swelling
  • Abdominal discomfort or bloatedness
  • Swelling or pain in any area of the body
  • Bleeding from the vagina in menopausal women or a change in periods for women who have not yet had the menopause

Of course, these symptoms could arise from many different causes, which can often delay the diagnosis of this form of cancer.

Leiomyosarcoma is typically detected when a patient undergoes endoscopy, an ultrasound, CT scan, MRI and / or a biopsy.

Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is a malignant disease which forms in the tissues of the liver. A few factors which can increase your chance of developing liver cancer are male gender, diabetes, and obesity.

A large number of people with liver cancer have no symptoms in the early stages. As the liver enlarges, due to disease, symptoms become more evident and usually begin with pain. Symptoms could include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue / Weakness
  • Jaundice
  • Bloating
  • Pain in the upper abdomen

Mesothelioma

The mesothelium is the a single lining of flattening cells that form a sac-like membrane. This membrane protects and lines several body cavities; i.e.: the chest and the abdomen.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer originating in the sac lining of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). A major risk factor of this disease is occupational exposure to asbestos.

Malignant Mesothelioma can lay hidden for 20 to 50 years from the time of exposure to the time of diagnosis. Symptoms could include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Increased production of sputum

Melanoma

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can originate from a mole. This cancer is most curable in its early stage, however once it has spread, the cure rate is greatly reduced. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and is usually found on sun-exposed parts of the body.

Melanomas can vary in their appearance. The first sign of a melanoma can be a change in an existing mole such as, color, shape, size, or texture. Symptoms could include:

  • Asymmetry – the shape of one half of the mole does not match the other half
  • Border – ragged, blurred, or irregular in outline
  • Color – mole may be uneven in color and can include black, brown, tan, white, gray, pink, or blue
  • Diameter – an increase in size, larger than 5 mm

Myeloma

Multiple myeloma is a rarely curable, progressive disease of the plasma cell. The plasma cell produces antibodies and helps the immune system fight infection and disease.

Various organs can be involved with this disease and the signs and symptoms can be many. Also taken into consideration is the stage of disease at diagnosis. Symptoms could include:

Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer most commonly diagnosed in early childhood, usually in children less than 2 years of age. Neuroblastoma presents itself in the form of a solid tumor in the sympathetic nervous system, but can also be found in the adrenal glands, neck, chest, or spinal cord. The cause of this disease is unknown but it is suspected that risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use during pregnancy.

Initial signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma can be unclear and vague. Symptoms can be caused by the tumor pressing on surrounding tissues and organs more progressed depending on stage of cancer at diagnosis. Symptoms could include:

  • Fatigue
